East Bay Caregivers: Laughter The Best Medicine for Seniors?

east bay caregivers

Not only for seniors, but for those who care for the aging, laughter IS good medicine – although it certainly doesn’t take the place of actual medications. As people grow older, life can lose its humor; caregivers who are overwhelmed often don’t laugh often enough, either. As East Bay in home caregivers, we wanted to share some of the benefits of laughter with you.

Researchers have found over the years that laughter actually does provide real benefits for the body. Some of these benefits include:

Lowering blood pressure. As we grow older, our risk for high blood pressure increases. Laughter increases vascular blood flow, thereby helping to lower or balance blood pressure. Oxygenation of the blood is increased when we laugh, making laughter a good way to reduce the risk of heart-related illnesses.

Laughter has been shown to increase blood flow in the body.

Laughter boosts immune cells, and counteracts the effects of stress. We all know that too much stress causes many health problems, but a little humor may improve immune response and actually raise the level of antibodies that fight infection!

Humor is a great tool for coping with stress and the issues of life as we grow older. Seniors often lose control of many situations as they grow older, which can be stressful. Laughter helps us all face some of life’s more unpleasant issues, and cope with stress.

People who enjoy a good laugh on a regular basis find that pain or discomfort doesn’t seem as bothersome.

As you can see, there are many reasons caregivers and seniors should enjoy a little laughter and humor every day. Not only is laughter healthy, it helps you become closer and adds a little more fun to life – and who doesn’t need that? Whether it’s watching a funny movie together, sharing humorous stories from your past, telling a funny joke, or even sharing something your child or spouse did with someone who’s aging, laughter just may be the best medicine.

Whether you need help caring for an aging loved one a few hours a day, overnight, or around the clock, count on the compassionate, dedicated East Bay caregivers at Care Indeed to care for your elderly loved one just as you would.
