As Bay Area in-home care providers, we know Alzheimer’s is a horrible disease that can strike people of all ages, although it typically occurs in aging seniors. Now, researchers have discovered what appears to be promising news: A key component of the Mediterranean Diet, extra-virgin olive oil, works to stave off cognitive decline.
Known to promote mental and heart health, along with brain function, the Mediterranean diet relies heavily on extra-virgin olive oil, or ‘EVOO’ as some call it. Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University researchers published their study in the Annals of Clinical and Translational Neurology. In the study, the researchers demonstrated that memory and learning ability were protected by consuming EVOO, and that it also reduces the formation of neurofibrillary “tangles” and amyloid-beta plaques in the brain.
According to the National Institutes of Health, EVOO removes damaged organelles, aggravated proteins, and other intracellular pathogens. EVOO also reduces inflammation of the brain, fighting off Alzheimer’s and aiding memory.
While the study was conducted on mice (as many studies are), it found that mice given food enriched with EVOO showed extraordinary differences in brain tissue and nerve cell function/appearance over those mice not given EVOO. Mice that consumed EVOO had well-preserved connections between neurons in the brain and performed far better on learning abilities and memory tests than those mice not given extra-virgin olive oil.
No indication was given in the study as to the amount of EVOO a person should consume to enjoy the benefit of warding off dementia and Alzheimer’s, however it’s easy to incorporate extra-virgin olive oil into the diet – and definitely worth giving a try.
