First of all, keep your body healthy, as physical health affects brain health. Seniors should exercise, which simply means moving around a lot, whether you work in the flower bed, take the dog for a walk, or participate in a dance class for seniors. A healthy diet that includes lots of fruits and veggies, chicken and fish helps reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease. Get plenty of sleep, and if you smoke, stop. Tobacco contains toxins that not only affect your heart and lungs, but brain cells too. Keep stress in check as much as possible by meditating, doing yoga, or practicing deep breathing.
An active mind is a healthier mind. Just because you’re aging doesn’t mean it’s time to stop learning or give your mind a break! Read, do crossword puzzles, even consider taking a college course or learning a new hobby such as crocheting, golfing, or painting. An active social life is important for keeping your mind active and engaged, so be sure to spend time with friends a couple of times each week. Watch a football game with friends if you’re a fan, play cards, go out to dinner or a movie. Do anything that involves spending time with friends.
