Whether you’re a senior or not, or caring for an elderly loved one, our San Francisco home care experts want to make you aware of the various cardiovascular conditions – and because it’s American Heart Month, we thought this would be the perfect time to do it.
Coronary disease is common, but there are several conditions that could result in illness or even death. Heart disease is a leading cause of death in both genders; we’ve listed some of the lesser-known conditions below.
Ischemic heart diseases include angina, coronary artery and heart disease, heart attack, and atherosclerosis, and is caused by a decreased blood supply to the heart due to narrowing of the coronary arteries.
Inflammatory heart disease may result in cardiomyopathy, pericardial disease, valvular heart disease, and atherosclerosis. This type of heart disease is often caused by infectious or toxic agents that affect the inner lining of the heart and cause inflammation of the heart muscle.
Hypertensive heart disease is fairly common and often results in high blood pressure (hypertension), peripheral arterial disease, atherosclerosis, and aneurysm. The blood vessels and heart often become overburdened with this condition.
Rheumatic heart disease is typically caused by rheumatic fever, whether a person has this condition once or several times. Rheumatic fever causes heart damage, particularly to the valves of the heart. Another result of rheumatic fever may be valvular heart disease.
Good heart health is essential to a long, healthy life. Some of the things you can do to ensure your own, or an elderly loved one’s, heart is as healthy as possible include eating a healthy diet, exercising, lowering intake of salt and saturated fats, and having regular medical checkups.
