Eat a balanced diet. Many people begin to lose their appetite as they grow older. It is very important to eat a diet that includes plenty of chicken, fish, fresh vegetables and fruits, and other foods that help stave off diabetes, hypertension, and heart disease. A diet rich in vitamin D and calcium may also help with issues such as osteoporosis.
Don’t smoke. While it’s easier said than done, the importance of not smoking cigarettes cannot be stressed enough. Smoking has been proven to cause cancer, and it can also cause more wrinkling of the skin, not to mention heart disease, COPD, and hardening of the arteries.
Get plenty of exercise. Although it’s understandable that those who are aging or elderly cannot run a mile a day, walking for 20 or 30 minutes most days of the week is a good way to strengthen muscles and keep fit.
Prevent falls. Falls often result in broken hips, and those who are elderly are more prone to falls. As in-home caregivers, we try to educate our clients about the dangers of falling, and what they can do to prevent it. Using a walker, removing tattered or torn rugs or carpeting, and making sure other obstacles such as electrical cords are moved out of the walking path are critical to safety.
Get regular health screenings. Anyone who is age 50 or older should get regular prostate screenings, mammograms, or other screenings if predisposed to genetic diseases or conditions.
