Summer is almost here, and the weather is beautiful in San Francisco, Palo Alto, and surrounding areas. When temperatures warm up a bit, seniors often like to get out and enjoy the great outdoors. For anyone who is aging, staying as physically and mentally active as possible can be key to good health. If you are an adult child of a senior parent, you may want to consider engaging in a few of these fun activities with your parent.
Summer concerts, summer festivals, county fairs, and more. There is never a shortage of festivals and events in San Francisco during summer months, or any other time of the year for that matter. One example is the Union Street Festival scheduled for this weekend, where visitors will enjoy arts and crafts, an organic farmers market, live entertainment, gourmet food, and more.
If your parent enjoys the Fourth of July fireworks, consider having a small get-together in your back yard. Fighting the crowds is not a good idea for the elderly, but what would your parent love more than a backyard barbecue complete with a Frisbee toss, horseshoes, or shuffleboard? Watch the fireworks from a distance, or have your own small fireworks display if it is permitted in your area.
Take your senior parent on a simple picnic. Pack up some sandwiches, soft drinks, fruit, sunscreen, and other supplies and head for an outdoor recreational area or state park. Before or after you enjoy your lunch, go for a walk through the park, fly a kite, or take a deck of cards along to play on the picnic table. Seniors love engaging in any activity that involves their children and loved ones, and it’s healthy for your parent as well. It’s all about staying active!
Depending on your loved one’s physical health, consider hiking, riding a bike, or just walking through the neighborhood. Do a little bird watching, or even enjoy a round of golf if your aging parent enjoys the game and is up to the challenge. Camping is always a fun way to enjoy a few days away from home.
