As reputable home caregivers who care for seniors in Palo Alto, we know that it’s all too easy for any of us – regardless of age – to fall into a routine or “rut.” It’s the same for seniors, who often eat the same old thing for breakfast every morning and engage in the same activities day in and day out. That old saying, “Use it or lose it” has never been more true than in keeping the mind/brain active, which can help reduce the risks of developing dementia or Alzheimer’s.
For seniors, it’s particularly important to engage the brain as much as possible. If you are a senior who still drives, you probably find yourself going the same route every time you go to a particular destination. Doing simple things such as changing up the route, having something different for breakfast, or reading a book if you don’t normally read can make a difference.
Seniors minds can become “sluggish,” which affects memory. It’s important to find ways to keep your mind active and engaged. Certainly routines are comfortable, but isn’t it worth changing things up a bit to keep your brain fit? Maybe you eat dinner at 5 p.m. sharp every day. Consider taking a walk before dinner, and eat at 5:30 instead. Small little changes can make a difference not only with enjoying a more alert, active mind, but in getting you out of the “doldrums” that can occur simply out of boredom, doing the same old thing day after day.
Think about things you enjoy. Do you like working crosswords or Sudoku puzzles, or playing solitaire on the computer? Maybe a video game such as Nintendo’s Brain Age™: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day would be something you would enjoy. If you like being around other people your age, find out if there is an exercise class, Bingo, or other activity locally that you would enjoy.
For seniors, staying active means keeping the brain active, not just the body. Keeping your mind active can help you enjoy a more fulfilled life, and avoid the same old routine that can make your mind feel older than it should be!
