Summer isn’t far away, and this is the time of the year when many people take care of those spring chores and tending to the garden. You may not give it much thought, but these tasks can be especially difficult for seniors, who may have mobility issues, arthritis, or other issues that make it difficult to move around easily. Whether cleaning up the gardens and flower beds or washing windows, we have a few suggestions for Bay Area caregivers to help make spring an easier, more enjoyable season for your aging loved ones.
How you can help in the flower and vegetable gardens. First, stroll through the area with your loved one and make a list of what needs to be done; you’ll want to include your senior by asking what he/she would like accomplished. It may be that dead tree limbs need to be taken down; the flower bed needs to be raked free of leaves; or the mulch, bark, or rocks need to be refreshed. Clear away any dead stalks or plants from last year that remain.
The area where your aging loved one will likely need the most help is preparing the garden, which usually requires clearing away sticks, leaves, and other debris. Turning over compost material is hard work for anyone, so you can imagine the struggle for a senior. Unless those who are older have raised garden beds, the stooping, bending over, or even getting up from being on his/her knees can be difficult if not impossible.
All you’re doing at this point is walking through to make a list of what your senior loved one needs done; this isn’t to say you or your siblings have to take care of all of these chores, as there are many lawn care professionals who cater to seniors.
What about those indoor spring cleaning tasks?
Helping Bay Area seniors with those spring cleaning tasks will be much appreciated, and help your loved one remain independent while living in a clean, well-maintained environment. Some of the things you can help with include:
- Everyone’s favorite, washing the windows
- Deep cleaning the carpets
- Vacuuming drapes or washing lighter curtains that are washable
- Helping get out clothes for spring and summer, and putting away winter clothes
- Checking/changing batteries in carbon monoxide and smoke alarms
- Cleaning under the refrigerator and stove
- Washing or dusting walls and baseboards
Not only do those who are elderly appreciate the help, it’s also a bonding experience for many adult children and their aging parents.
