These include nuts, whole grain cereal, salmon, low-fat dairy products, greens, black beans, cantaloupe, bananas, tuna, lima beans and more. Also include poultry, fish, and plenty of healthy fruits and vegetables while trying to limit fried and processed foods.
Most doctors recommend lifestyle changes before resorting to prescription medications in an effort to reduce blood pressure. Some of these changes include:
- Losing weight for those who are overweight
- Quitting smoking
- Lowering stress by engaging in activities that are relaxing such as reading, painting, playing or watching a movie with a pet, and spending time with family/friends
- Cutting the amount of alcohol consumed
- Getting a good night’s sleep
When diet and lifestyle changes don’t do the trick, medications may be prescribed
There are several prescription medications your doctor may prescribe depending on your specific needs that work to lower blood pressure. These include diuretics, beta blockers, vasodilators, ACE inhibitors, calcium channel blockers and other medications.
